We use our washing machines most days, but when was the last time you actually cleaned your washing machine? Over time our washing machines can actually get pretty dirty, as mould and dirt can easily build up, causing nasty smells. It’s good to give your machine a clean now and again to give it a good refresh. Here at Helpling, we’ve given you three methods to clean your machine. One method for those in a rush, one method for those who prefer to use natural products, and another for those who don’t mind a using bit of bleach. The basic method
If you’re strapped for time and want to give your washing machine a quick clean this method is your best option – it will take you less than two minutes! Just pop your machine on the hottest cycle with no clothes in it. You can also put in a little laundry detergent as well to give your machine that extra clean.
Clean with vinegar and baking soda
Vinegar and baking soda are amazing natural cleaning agents. To clean your machine, pour two cups of white wine vinegar into the detergent draw and put the machine on its hottest cycle. Once that first cycle has finished, run another hot cycle and put half a cup of baking soda into the drum. Once the cycle has finished, wipe the inside of the machine down with a microfibre cloth, making sure you don’t miss the seals. Make sure to leave the washing machine door open for the machine to completely dry.
Clean with bleach
If you’re happy to use it, then definitely give bleach a go when you next clean your machine – it’s extremely effective in getting rid of mould and dirt! Simply add half a cup of bleach into the machine’s drum and half a cup of washing detergent into the draw. Next put the wash on hot and pause it once the machine has filled with water. Leave the machine paused for an hour and then begin the cycle again. To ensure all the bleach has gone, run an extra rinse cycle. Once the second cycle has finished, wipe the interior down with a microfibre cloth. We’d recommend putting on a white wash after you’d cleaned with bleach, just to make sure any darks don’t get damaged by any leftover bleach residue!
