When was the last time you properly cleaned your windows? Cleaning windows can feel like a chore and is often at the bottom of most people’s to-do lists. However, it is important to give them the occasional clean to allow sunlight to properly get into your home. So how do you properly clean windows? And how do you clean them without getting those frustrating streaks? Don’t fear, here at Helpling we have some super easy tips and techniques that will get your windows fresh and clean and most importantly streak-free!
Check the weather forecast
Before you actually tackle the windows, it’s important to plan ahead and decide when you’re going to clean them. Make sure you check the weather forecast in preparation, as you shouldn’t clean your windows when sunshine is forecast. Stick to cloudy days, otherwise the sun is likely to dry the window glass too quickly, resulting in the dreaded streaks that we want to avoid!
Remove any curtains and blinds
Now you have decided on a good day to clean your windows, you should remove any curtains or blinds first. This also gives you the perfect opportunity to give your drapes a wash too. Always check the label first before throwing them into the washing machine!
Dust your windows
Before you put any liquid on your windows, get rid of any dust and dirt from the window frame. Use a duster cloth to remove any dust and a vacuum attachment to sweep away any dirt. For heavy set-in dirt, use a little soapy water and a clean microfibre cloth and scrub. Follow up with a dry cloth to wipe up any excess water.
Wash your windows
When it comes to washing the actual windows, you have a couple of options. You can either use a specialised window cleaner or if you don’t have one to hand, you can make your own window cleaning solution!
To make your own solution you will need:
- Two tablespoons of vinegar
- Two tablespoons of household ammonia or rubbing alcohol (this will help get rid of any bacteria and any dirt that is hard to budge).
- 2 cups of warm water
Mix the ingredients together and pour them into a spray bottle or a bucket. Pop on some gloves and you’re almost ready to go.
If you don’t have any vinegar you can always use a mixture of washing up liquid and warm water.
Avoid steaks, and soap suds
Now for arguably the most important step if you want to avoid any streaks and soap suds. Firstly, do not use kitchen roll or paper towels, swap them out for microfibre cloths instead. Secondly, clean in an ‘S’ shape. By an ‘S’ shape we mean wipe and buff the window in the shape of the letter S. This will allow you to reach every corner and also stop any smears!
