With summer just around the corner, it is the perfect time to deep clean and re-organise your wardrobe. If your wardrobe is full to the brim with unorganised, unfolded clothes, this can be a daunting task that gets put off. Here at Helpling, the UK’s leading marketplace for cleaning services, we know life is stressful enough at the moment, so we’ve compiled a list of top tips to help guide you through this task. Follow these five simple steps and your wardrobe will be sparkling clean and summer ready in no time!
- Take everything out
And yes, we mean everything! It’s easy to fall into the trap of doing a half-hearted clear out, but doing this will make a deep clean very difficult. Systematically go through each corner and draw and pull everything out onto your floor – you can worry about going through the pile later. You’ll be surprised at how many pieces of clothing you actually have, and may even find that unexpected item you thought you’d lost!
- Have a try on and decide the fate of your clothes
For this step you need to be ruthless, no excuses allowed! The six-month rule might help with this. Ask yourself if you’ve either worn this item in the last six months or will wear it in the next six months. If the answer is no, it’s time to say goodbye. Helpling, recommends putting your clothes into three piles: keep, donate/sell and recycle. Instead of just binning items you don’t wear anymore, assess the quality and if your items are still wearable donate them to a good cause.
If some of your clothes are a bit worse for wear e.g. stained or ripped, it’s better to recycle them at a local recycling centre – it’s way more environmentally friendly than just chucking them in the bin!
- Deep clean time
Before you put your newly organised clothes back, you need to make sure you give the wardrobe a good deep clean. This is a job that isn’t done often, so you want to make sure you cover every corner to ensure the clean lasts for as long as possible! First, begin by dusting the walls and drawers – it might be easier to use a hoover attachment depending on how large your wardrobe is. Then wipe down each area with a disinfectant wipe or spray and cloth. Don’t forget to give the top of the wardrobe a dust too, you’ll be surprised how much dust gathers there!
- Reorganise your wardrobe
Make sure you don’t just throw your newly organised pile of clothes into your wardrobe – you don’t want to waste all of your time and hard work! Fold your items neatly and try to put them into categories. This will make deciding on an outfit much easier as you will be able to clearly see each item you own.
- Make your wardrobe smell nice
Wardrobe fresheners are a great addition to your closet, as they will ensure your clothes continue to smell fresh long after your deep clean! You can find wardrobe freshers at most local retailers for very affordable prices. However, if you’re feeling creative, why not make your own freshener with your favourite scent? Dried lavender is a great scent to use and will keep any nasty moths and musty smells at bay.
